Growing up in 1990s New York City, I was lucky to experience music in its most electrifying forms—dancing to DJs like Mark Ronson and Stretch Armstrong at some of the city’s most iconic spots, while also finding inspiration in smaller venues where DJs weren’t just playing songs, they were curating a mood, controlling the night’s trajectory. Music was everywhere in my life. In my house or in my headphones, the soundtrack ranged from Miles Davis to The Rolling Stones, Howlin’ Wolf to Madonna, Nina Simon to Stevie Wonder, it shaped my love for all genres.

I got into DJing by accident. I was always the friend making mixes (and later, playlists), so when a friend asked me to create one for her wedding, I realized an iPod sitting in the middle of the room didn’t feel quite right. So, I taught myself how to DJ for the occasion. Over a decade later, that spontaneous decision turned into a word-of-mouth career I never expected. From weddings and private events to residencies at bars across Los Angeles, the greatest joy is taking people on a journey and watching them lose themselves in the music.

Whether it’s a Soul & Motown night, disco, ‘90s hip-hop and R&B, classic rock ‘n’ roll, and often times a combination of it all, my goal is simple: keep the vibe strong and the dance floor moving. I don’t produce music so it’s hard to put myself in the same category as the many incredible DJ’s out there. Rather, I’ve always called myself an intuitive DJ. Reading a room is my superpower, and there’s nothing better than that perfect moment when the right song shifts the energy of the night. I think that’s why restaurants hire me to curate playlists for them as well. The ability to create a vibe and anticipate what someone is going to want to hear is the difference between algorithms and human connection.

If DJ Di is playing, everyone in the room is smiling.

I think if you could just DJ for the world right now, everything would feel okay.
— A dance party regular said this to me in 2020. During pandemic, people were missing my Friday night oldies dance party at Umbrella Co., so I made a playlist of the songs that I often play. I got so many videos of people dancing in their living rooms, feeling a little spark of joy once again. This is the playlist.
